What is Somatic Experiencing®

Somatic Experiencing® relieves the symptoms of trauma and stress in a gentle yet profoundly effective way by deactivating unresolved survival energies.

SE™ addresses stress and trauma symptoms at the root cause by facilitating the completion of self-protective motor responses and the release of thwarted survival energy in the body. Clients are skillfully and gently guided to develop tolerance for difficult bodily sensations and suppressed emotions.

With nowhere to go

When experiences that stirred up survival energy did not get the chance to complete the appropriate actions (fight, run away, etc.), the tremendous energy generated by our survival preparations fails to deactivate. Instead, they continues to live in our systems, often unconsciously.

As that energy stays in our system, it gets stuck as patterns of neuromuscular readiness, leaving a person in a chronic state of arousal and dysfunction in the nervous system.

The nervous system controls the information flow between our brain and our body, including how we think, feel, move, and make meaning about ourselves and the world. In regulating the nervous system, all of these channels of experience can begin to change.

In this process, what is rediscovered is an embodied experience of safety, restoring a natural, authentic and vibrant way of being.

What is a
Session Like?

Somatic Experiencing® sessions are geared towards healing what get’s in the way of embodying your goals.

Sessions begin in seated dialogue. As you share, I often ask you to pause and notice what you are aware of in your body. Sensing what is happening in our body is a skill we hone together.

This step takes us out of the thinking brain and story-telling/meaning making and into the body, slowly and safely, where the root of the pattern or conflict resides— time, space and awareness allows the body to share it’s story.

Trauma and stress are not found in the event. Rather, they are what is stored in the nervous system. Therefore, we centralize working with the body and the nervous system, rather than the story, to integrate what emerges. (This is considered a “bottom-up” approach to healing and is often the missing link to embodying our values, goals and gifts and the key to transformation.)

As we give space, time, support and awareness to our bodily experience, we allow the organic intelligence to carry out the healing process.

In this process, you will come to develop a deep and intimate understanding of how your system gets activated— and more importantly, how it gets free.
